Caroline
Nappo
Jefferson

Caroline was not aware while growing up in the Caribbean island, Trinidad, that she was destined for a career as a Nurse Practitioner. She was raised by her grandmother, the local bush medicine woman, who made tea from Avocado leaves to treat menstrual cramps, poultice from Soursop leaves applied to the skin to heal eczema, and everyone’s favorite, Wonder-of-the-World leaves applied on anything related  to the musculoskeletal system of the body. However, it wasn’t just her grandmother’s knowledge of medicinal plants that made the villagers seek her out, but rather it was the time she spent listening to them about the other aspects of their lives with compassion and understanding. In essence, her grandmother was treating the whole person. As a Nurse Practitioner, Caroline approaches healthcare from a holistic perspective. Writing a prescription is just one aspect of treating the patient and the patient must be viewed in totality as a physical, emotional, and spiritual being. The most satisfying feedback she can receive from patients is, “Thank you for listening to me. You really care”.

After spending two successful decades in real estate, Caroline began a second career in nursing. She graduated from Georgia Southern University FNP program in Statesboro and has spent time as an OR nurse and hospice case manager. She gained a true appreciation for the necessity of Primary Care intervention and education for the general public while working in hospice. Knowing and seeing first hand the ravaging effects of diseases, it is vital that education be incorporated into the care of her patients so that they can understand and participate in their well being. The opportunity to be a part of the pilot NP residency program through Emory and Medlink is a chance to close the circle. Working in rural Georgia among the underserved and within her home community adds a special component to her role as a Nurse Practitioner; it binds the ties to her grandmother to deliver compassionate care to those she serves.

Deanna
Essig
Winder

Deanna Essig grew up in the rural Midwest where there was one doctor in town and the nearest hospital was 2 towns and miles of cornfields away.  A brief hospital stay at age 12 led to her interest in the healthcare field. She began volunteering at that hospital at age 14 and has many fond memories of the experience. Once in college, Deanna decided to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice with the goal of becoming a Juvenile probation officer. Even as a young adult, she knew that adolescence is a pivotal time in one’s life and she hoped to provide direction to those who most needed it to improve individual outcomes. After graduating, however, Deanna married and moved to another state with her husband, where they started their family. She never did work as a juvenile probation officer, but she never lost that drive to help others. Before becoming a full-time stay-at-home mom, she gained valuable experience working with adolescents in a residential mental health treatment facility. Five children and a couple of interstate moves later, with the final One landing her family in Georgia over 20 years ago, she decided to pursue her degree in nursing. She received her ADN from Gwinnett Tech and completed her BSN while working nights at Gwinnett Medical Center. She will receive her master’s degree in nursing from Georgia Southwestern State University this spring. Deanna has been a nurse for 7 years, working on a high-risk pregnancy unit until about a year ago

when she decided to expand her horizons and do procedural nursing at an endoscopy center and an eye surgery center. Her varied clinical experiences for school include working with the underserved in rural primary care clinics as well as working with patients in a suburban primary/urgent care and pediatric practice. Deanna loves all aspects of primary care but is especially passionate about educating adolescents and young adults about how their habits and practices today can affect their future health. She is looking forward to being a part of the team at MedLink and its commitment to excellence in serving its communities.

Josie
Freeman
Bowman

My name is Josie Freeman, and I will be graduating with my Family Nurse Practitioner degree from the University of North Georgia in May. I graduated from my BSN program in 2017 at Piedmont College. I have been working as a Registered Nurse at Northeast Georgia Medical Center since graduating. My experience at the hospital is in medical/surgical services with various clinical specialties including GI, nephrology, pulmonology, hospice, and others.

I grew up in Franklin County and currently still live there with my husband. This area of Georgia has always been home for us. Our hobbies include spending time with our families and outdoor activities on our farm. I have always had a desire to be a provider in my local area and enjoy being in a rural care setting.

My clinical experience has been centered in the primary care setting at offices that are in rural areas. I have had specialty rotations in pediatric and woman’s health offices. I will have completed a total of 720 clinical hours by the time I graduate. I enjoy working with all patient populations, but my favorite population is older adults. I spent one clinical semester at a MedLink office and really enjoyed my time there. I find it very fulfilling to be able to provide care for underserved populations to help them maintain or achieve their health goals. I feel that everyone should have access to healthcare and the health resources they need.

I am very excited to begin my journey as a FNP in the NoGAPP Residency Program. I feel the residency program will help me become a well-rounded provider. My goal for my future career is to provide high quality guideline-based care to my patients. I look forward to beginning my journey in the residency program.
