About

Dr. Moreland is an Assistant Professor, clinical track, at the Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. She has an M.S. and Ph.D. from Columbia University School of Nursing in New York. Dr. Moreland completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina School of Nursing, completing research in young adults with congenital heart disease, examining the relationship between illness uncertainty and post-trauma symptoms. In 2012, she joined the Rwanda Human Resources for Health (HRH) Program as the first cohort of U.S. institution faculty in Rwanda. HRH, a 7-year initiative, is an academic collaboration between the Rwanda Ministry of HealthMO and 23 USI teaching institutions in that and twenty-six U.S. teaching institutions. The goal of HRH is to increase the quantity as well as the rigor and diversity of training of healthcare professionals to reduce health disparities within the population. From 2012-2017, she lived in both the rural and urban areas of Rwanda, in a wide range of settings, to improve the quality of education and clinical skills for nurses. Dr. Moreland assisted with the creation and implementation of the country’s first Masters of Science in Nursing (MScN) Program in collaboration with her Rwandan colleagues.

Teaching

Dr. Moreland is committed to involving students in the teaching process using active-learning strategies. Understanding the context of cultural relevance related to patient care is the focus of her teaching.

Research

Dr. Moreland’s research interests include global health, health disparities in LGBT people, and maternal-newborn health in low resource settings. She is Co-Principal Investigator in a qualitative study in lesbian and bisexual women in Rwanda examining Minority Stress. In addition, she is a Co-Investigator in a study examining the impact of nutrition, infection, and vaginal microbiome on preterm birth, premature rupture of membranes, and low birth weight in Rwanda.
