Cardiovascular, Brain & Biomarkers
Our cardiovascular and neuroscience research focuses on turning discoveries into practical solutions. Whether tackling Alzheimer’s, improving sleep, supporting maternal and child health, or addressing diabetes and mental well-being, we look at the whole picture — biology, environment and society. From the lab to the clinic, we’re here to make knowledge work for people and communities.
Trauma's Lasting Mark
Groundbreaking research from Assistant Professor Telisa Spikes shows that Black women who experienced trauma as children face impaired artery function, a silent warning sign for heart disease. Studying over 400 Black adults in Atlanta, Spikes found women — but not men — carry this hidden risk, which can lead to stroke, heart attack, and organ damage. Her findings underscore the value of integrating trauma-informed care into heart‑health screenings to help prevent life-threatening disease.
