Violence & Injury Prevention & Treatment
Our research spans a wide spectrum — from preventing violence and trauma to addressing substance use, behavioral health, PTSD, surgical recovery, pain management, and chronic conditions like fibromyalgia. This research leads to real-life improvements: policy and practice changes, better patient outcomes, and community empowerment. These efforts advance health care that is more effective, more responsive, and more humane.
Digital Tools for Remote Support
When COVID-19 revealed the urgent need for remote, trauma-informed support for survivors of intimate partner violence, Assistant Professor Sangmi Kim stepped in. Her team is developing digital tools to honor survivors' lived experiences, minimize re-traumatization, and support long-term healing, including an AI-powered tool that recommends personalized resources based on survivors' own social media narratives.
“The whole point of my research and outreach is to educate people so that fewer people die from overdoses. I am a harm reductionist. I am trying to keep people alive, so if one day they’re ready for recovery, they’re able to do so.”
