Interdisciplinary Training for Nurse Scientists In Improving Outcomes in Chronic Conditions (T32)
Training Grant Goals and Objectives
The goal of this National Institute of Nursing Research funded training program is to prepare pre-doctoral and post-doctoral nurse scientists to develop and test interventions to improve health outcomes of persons with or at risk for chronic conditions such as cardiovascular and neurological diseases, cancer, diabetes mellitus, HIV-AIDS, and asthma/COPD. To assist trainees develop independent research programs, the goals of the program are to provide:

The theoretical and conceptual basis to generate a program of research examining self management and other interventions to improve individual, family and health resource use outcomes.

Methodological skills to support innovative design and rigorous testing of interventions with measurement of biobehavioral markers and health related outcomes, and

Mentorship of trainees to support their science and career development and interdisciplinary scholarship.

Program Options:
For Predoctoral Trainees, the program is embedded in the PhD in Nursing program, and includes specific coursework in health outcomes research, intervention research, chronic conditions, and health economics.
For Postdoctoral Trainees, selected courses are completed with consideration of prior courses and individualized research goals.
Pre and Postdoctoral Training Programs Include:

Participation in focused bi-monthly seminars and journal clubs

Research residencies and “hands-on” research with faculty engaged in successful development and testing of interventions.

Exposure to a broad range of professional development experiences through participation in the School of Nursing, Woodruff Health Sciences Center and University seminars, the Atlanta Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the School of Nursing Office of Nursing Research.

Training in the responsible conduct of research.
Stipend and Tuition
Individuals selected as fellows in this training program receive a monthly stipend, tuition assistance, benefit assistance, assistance for professional travel, and modest funds to support research related expenses.
Application
All applicants to this T32 pre-doctoral and post-doctoral program must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States and must submit official transcripts from previous and/or current institutions and 3 reference letters. Applications to the post-doctoral program should be either enrolled in or graduated from a research-focused doctoral program at the time of application.
Predoctoral Applicants (Deadline is January 3rd)
Applicants to the predoctoral program must meet the admission criteria for the Emory University Laney Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (BSN-PhD or MSN to PhD Track) and have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing and a professional nursing license. Pre-doctoral applicants must also submit GRE scores taken within the last 5 years and a brief essay indicating their prior research experience and their research interests related to interventions for persons with or at risk for a specific chronic condition. Postdoctoral Applicants (Deadline is April 1st)
Postdoctoral applicants must submit their curriculum vitae and a brief description of their research goals including the next logical step in their research and research training, goals for research skill development, and interest in a faculty mentor; three letters of reference; and transcripts from doctoral degree program.
