Installing Windows XP Professional

  • Create a single partition using all available disk space
  • Format the partition with NTFS
  • Use name: Admin
  • Use organization: School of Nursing
  • Use computer name: SON-XXX
  • Use typical settings for TCP/IP, add the following DNS suffixes: nursing.emory.edu; service.emory.edu; cc.emory.edu
  • Do not join it to the domain yet
  • Add "temp" as a user (for installing apps) with local admin privilege/password
  • Change admin account to new name: son-ad, and set password

Change some desktop settings

  • Change the way users logon or logoff -> uncheck "Use the Welcome Screen"
  • Show Quick Launch under properties of taskbar

Install Drivers

  • Install necessary drivers from the “Drivers and Utilities” CD, set NIC media type to auto sense
  • Delete the folder that the extracted files created on the c:\
  • Turn on firewall.Right-click on My Network Places, Properties. Right-click Local Area Connection, Properties. Click Advanced tab, check box for Internet Connection Firewall.

Install Windows Updates

    • Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools, Windows Updates.
    • Choose custom install, not express, so you can see what it is going to install. Run all critical updates and any others desired.
    • Restart then run Windows Update again to make sure it got them all. Keep running Windows Update until there are no more critical updates.
  • Set windows auto-updates to update every day @ 4 pm.

Copy NewSid

  • Copy PC Info and NewSid 4.0 to c:\image
  • Set only administrators group full control to image folder. Remove all other groups

 

Installing Applications
*Follow the procedures below logged in as the local Temp user until specified otherwise*

 

Install the CDRW and DVD Software

  • Install Roxio Creator from a CD
  • Install Power DVD player from a CD

 

Install Adobe Reader 8

  • Install it from \\nursing-file\apps\Acrobat\Acrobat Reader

 

Install Cutewriter (free PDF writer)

  • CuteWriter (free PDF writer). Run converter.exe and then cutewriter.exe. Available here for download.

 

Configure Internet Explorer

  • Configure homepage to http://www.nursing.emory.edu/pulse
  • Uncheck Automatic discovery of proxy server
  • Set "Temporary Internet Folder" to 20MB

 

Install Flash and Java Plug-ins

 

Install Microsoft Office 2007 Professional

  • Install from \\nursing-file\apps\office 2007
  • Do a complete installation
  • Install service pack 1 from \\nursing-file\apps\Office updates

 

Install Endnote X (10)

  • Install it from \\nursing-file\apps\Endnote\endnote10, with full install
  • Once installation is done, copy 3 files starting with EN10Cwyw from c:\program files\endnote to c:\program files\Microsoft office\office12\startup

 

Install MeetingMaker

  • Install it from \\nursing-file\apps\MeetingMaker\MM7
  • Run the file called Meeting Maker first to get the configuration for Emory
  • Then, run the file called Setup to get Palm Conduits
  • Set Users “write” permission (reset child objects) on c:\program files\meetingmaker

  

Install QuickTime Player

  • Install it from \\nursing-file\apps\quicktime

 

Install Windows Media Player 11

  • Install from \\nursing\apps\windows media player. Set Windows Media Player as the default player.

 

Install Spybot

  • Install it from \\nursing-file\apps\spybotsd14
  • Don’t put icon on desktop or quick launch
  • Check for updates
  • Run the immunization to block known bad websites

Install SPSS

  • Install most recent version from \\nursing-file\apps\SPSS
  • Run the SPSS License Authorization Wizard to activate w/ Emory site license

Install Symantec Antivirus 10

  • Go to firewall settings, open udp 2967 and 1056 (Symantec 1, 2967/tcp; Symantec 2, 1056/tcp)
  • Go to \\nursing-file\apps\Symantec\Symantec 10\SAV 10.1
  • Do Complete install
  • Do the Managed Install, set it to use the server: Nursing-Web2
  • Set auto-update daily at 8pm (will get the settings from server later on)

 

  Configure the Profile and System

·         Enable the following shortcuts from Display Properties (My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer)

·         Enable the Quick Launch toolbar from the Taskbar and Star Menu Properties, delete all the quick launch icons except for Show Desktop, Internet Explorer, Outlook, and Outlook Express

·         From the Taskbar and Star Menu Properties, Uncheck Group similar taskbar buttons, Uncheck Hide inactive icons.

·         Show Small icons for programs in Customize Start Menu in the Taskbar and Star Menu Properties

·         Click on Start then go to Programs and right click on any program and click Sort by Name

·         Go into all program folders and sort it by name

·         C:\documents and settings\all users\start menu (Reset permissions on all child objects)

·         Run all the applications  

·         Set the monitor refresh rate to 60, if necessary (i.e. if image is distorted)

·         Open Internet Explorer and Delete cookies and all offline Temporary Internet Files, clear history.

·         Clear the Documents history and program history under taskbar properties

·         Empty the Recycle Bin.

·         Reboot, and then Login as the local Administrator account (son-ad)

·         Copy the Temp profile to the Default User profile using the System Properties User Profiles tab

·         Create a user called Temp1

·         Log on as Temp1 and see if all configurations have been copied from the Temp's profile including the lab printer

·         Run every program logged on as a Temp1 and see if everything works

 

Creating the Image

  • Reboot, then logon as local Administrator and delete the Temp and Temp1 accounts and profiles.
  • Defragment the machine and shut it down.
  • Start Ghost session on server to accept dumping image, then boot with Ghost boot disk to start creating image onto the server (lrc-file)
  • Use high compression when creating the image

 

Apply Image

  • Get image from server (lrc-file)
  • Run Newsid
  • Change computer name and join domain
