You will not be able to install most software on SON computers by yourself. Please contact the IT Office to have work-related software installed. We ask that you not install non-work related software. For example, making everyday emails look cute with Hotbar software is not work-related.
Types of inappropriate software installation include:
Spyware
Spyware is software that is put on your computer to secretly gather information and relay it to advertisers or other interested parties. A lot of software downloaded from the internet is spyware or separately installs spyware without your knowledge. Spyware can slow down the computer or cause other problems.
Unlicensed Software
The installation of unlicensed software is not condoned. The IT department will only install licensed software. Please do not ask us to install unlicensed software or to provide you with administrator rights on the computer so that you can install it.
Peer-to-Peer File Sharing
The official Emory position on peer-to-peer file sharing utilities (e.g. KaZaa, Limewire, Morpheus, iMesh, Gnutella) is as follows:
- The software itself is not illegal or banned at Emory, however, it is not legal to download or share copyrighted material for which you do not hold the copyright.
If you have a legitimate academic need for peer-to-peer file sharing software please consult with the IT staff. If you want to download music from the internet please purchase it through vendors like Apple iTunes, Microsoft MSN Music, Music Match, Real Rhapsody, etc.
