Services and Resources

Services

Computer support is available during normal business hours 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Otis Head, computer support specialist for the Nursing School, can be contacted at 404-712-9926 or email.

Reasonable efforts are made to resolve issues according to the customer’s schedule. In general, customers’ should receive a reply or have the issue resolved within one business day. We reserve the right to prioritize problem tickets according to severity and urgency.

Computer support from the university’s central IT unit, University Technology Services (UTS), can be obtained by calling their Help Desk at 404-727-7777 or submitting a web form request at https://www.app.emory.edu/helpdesk/. University Technology Services (UTS) support is mainly limited to the central IT resources they control. This includes Eagle email, LearnLink, Blackboard, Meeting Maker, OPUS/Peoplesoft, and Webdrive. University Technology Services (UTS) does not support resources maintained exclusively by the school, including file servers (mapped network drives designated L, M, S, or T drives) and printing. In cases where University Technology Services (UTS) is asked for help on a resource that resides locally in the school Academic and Administrative IT will refer you back to the IT staff in the school.

Students should contact the Academic and Administrative IT Help Desk for support of their personal computers. University Technology Services (UTS) runs a “clean room” in the North Decatur Building where they will clean infected computers. This service is available to students only.

Resources

Desktop:
The School of Nursing has approximately 150 desktop and laptop computers for faculty/staff use. These range from 500 MHz Pentium III to 3000 MHz Pentium IV computers. A four year replacement schedule allows for continual replenishment of our computing environment.

Twenty network laser printers are available for faculty, staff, and students. Thirty non-network printers provide professors and key staff members with the capability to print confidential documents.

Our student computer lab contains an additional 30 desktops (2800 MHz Pentium IV). Our 12 “smart” classrooms contain desktop computers, projectors and Crestron brand control systems.

Servers:
Three Dell PowerEdge servers provide file, print and application services for faculty, staff and students. File services provide access to a total storage space of 280 GB. Print services support twenty network printers. Application services are provided to the student computer lab for nursing educational software.

The servers run Active Directory services, DNS services, Symantec Antivirus Server, and Windows Server Update Services to provide central management of all desktop computers.

Fault-tolerance is provided by RAID level 5, striping with parity, on the servers. Disaster recovery is provided by nightly backup to tape media.

Network:
Network service and equipment is the responsibility of the Network Communications Division (NetCom).

The School of Nursing building has 100 megabit switched Ethernet connections to each computer. Each of the five floors has a network switch. The switches on each floor connect to the master switch for the building with a gigabit Ethernet connection. The master switch connects to the campus backbone via a gigabit Ethernet connection.

Wireless networking is scheduled to be added to the School of Nursing in the summer of 2006. Wireless is currently available at other campus locations including the Health Sciences Center Library, School of Public Health, Cox Hall, DUC, SAAC, the Quadrangle, and the main Woodruff Library.

NetCom has a policy against customers adding “intrusive” devices (e.g. port splitters, hubs, switches, routers, wireless access points, multi-homed PC's) to the network. NetCom states that “Any violations of standards, procedures, or guidelines pursuant to this policy may result in a disconnection of network services…” Please see the Network Connection Policy for the complete policy statement.
