These courses provide the conceptual foundation of
baccalaureate education needed to begin graduate study.

380 Health Assessment |

Health assessment provides the knowledge and skills
necessary for assessing the health status of clients.
Students use structured interviews to elicit health
histories and health practices, and perform physical
examinations in a systematic manner to determine areas
in which health promotion activities should be
implemented or reinforced. Students are introduced to a
broad range of normal variations through supervised
practice with peers in the laboratory setting. Further
application will occur within concurrent and subsequent
clinical nursing courses.

410 Professional Nursing in a Dynamic Context |

This course provides opportunities for students to
explore conceptual and methodological factors
influencing professional practice. Students will examine
the context of professional practice, the evolution of
nursing as a profession, and evolving roles of
contemporary practice. Opportunities for development as
a group member and as a professional nurse in advanced
practice are provided.

This course provides opportunities for students to
explore legal, ethical, political, and economic factors
and issues influencing professional practice. Students
will design and negotiate individual plans for expanding
their skills in teaching/learning group facilitation,
conflict management, negotiation, and political
activism. Prerequsite NRSG 410.

420 Community Health Nursing |

The focus of this course is on knowledge and skill
development necessary for the application of the nursing
process to aggregates and populations in the community.
Assessment skills are expanded to provide a database for
community analysis and diagnosis of health
problems/needs and populations at risk. Models for
planning, implementing, and evaluating programs for
promoting the health of populations are presented.
Content specific to contemporary public health problems
and populations at risk is presented, and models for
addressing such problems are examined. Clinical learning
experiences are designed to develop skill in application
of the nursing process in promoting the health of
communities. Students will participate in assessment of
the health needs of aggregates and populations and in
planning, implementing, and evaluating services and
programs designed to promote the health of communities.
Creativity in nursing practice will be promoted through
student initiated innovative projects designed to
address the health needs of target groups. Learning
experiences will be provided in a variety of community
settings, including public health, school and
occupational settings. Prerequsite NRSG 410, NRSG
380.

Graduation Requirements
- Completion of 60 semester hours (or 90 quarter
hours) of general education prerequisites
- Completion of 24 semester hours of bridge
courses, which must be taken at Emory University
- Completion of a minimum of 48 semester hours of
graduate level course work as prescribed by the
chosen specialty
- Completion of course requirements of the graduate
program within five years of date of entrance into
the program
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
