Lillian Carter Center for International Nursing

International Health (MSN-MPH Only)

Apply Now Online!

The Emory University School of Nursing, in partnership with the Rollins School of Public Health, offers an innovative program leading to dual Masters degrees in International Health, the International MSN-MPH.  This program aims to prepare leaders in international nursing and public health, granting dual degrees in Nursing (MSN) and Public Health (MPH). The program is housed in the Lillian Carter Center for International Nursing in the Emory University School of Nursing.  This center was born of Emory’s strong partnership with the Carter Center and the nursing school’s commitment to the global advancement of health through nursing.

Emory University is rich in campus resources and is based in Atlanta, a city that is home to key actors in international health.  This international environment presents students unique opportunities for professional growth.  The CDC, Task Force for Child Survival, CARE, CNN, and American Cancer Society are all located here.  Students in the International MSN-MPH will be offered many opportunities to collaborate with these organizations.

This program is for:

  • Nurses with experience in International health returning for mid-career training;
  • International nurse leaders, including those from outside the United States, aiming to incorporate public health and nursing into practice and/or nursing curricula in other countries;
  • Nurses interested in working for governmental or non-governmental organizations including faith-based organizations.  Baccalaureate-prepared nurses with limited international experience can gain knowledge and skills necessary for such work;
  • Non-nurses with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing.  Such students would be required to complete the nursing bachelors level course work before beginning graduate work.

The program is designed so that students may complete the academic requirements for both the Masters of Science in Nursing and the Masters of Public Health degrees in two calendar years.  Fifty-nine semester hour credits are the required minimum for the dual degree.  Students apply both to the School of Nursing and the School of Public Health, specifically the Department of International Health.

Students must complete 27 semester hours in the School of Nursing and 32 semester hours in the School of Public Health. The program can be completed in 5 semesters of full-time study although it is recommended that a sixth semester be used for a practicum.  These practica are often in an international setting.
