Gerontological Nurse Practitioner

Program Description

The Gerontological Nurse Practitioner major is one of four majors in the Master of Science in Nursing program within the Adult and Elder Health Nursing Department. Graduates of the program are prepared for advanced practice roles in a wide variety of settings and agencies that provide health care to the elderly.

The gerontological specialty prepares nurses for advanced practice through a focused program of study.  Students may choose the following clinical options for specialty role emphasis: nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist.  Graduates have over 500 hours of directly supervised clinical practice, are eligible for geriatric nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist certification, and are prepared to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing and increasingly complex health care environment.

The 43 credit hour graduate program can be completed in one calendar year of full-time study or may be pursued part- time.  A post-master's option in gerontology is also available.  A dual degree with the School of Public Health is available. Students choosing the MSN-MPH option will be required to complete at least one additional semester of study.
