The Family Nurse Practitioner specialty prepares nurses for the exciting challenges of advanced nursing practice in diversified settings. Graduates assume responsibility for assessment and management of a broad range of health needs of individuals and families across the life span. Graduates have over 600 hours of directly supervised clinical practice and are eligible to take the appropriate American Nurse Credentialing Center and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners certification examinations.
The association with Emory's Rollins School of Public Health, the Carter Center, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention enhances the community-based approach.

Students and faculty advisors plan clinical experiences collaboratively to meet course objectives and the individual needs of the students. More than 40 community-based sites and private practices provide a rich variety of primary health care experiences with clients of all ages.
In the Atlanta metropolitan area, major facilities used for clinical placement include health departments, hospital outpatient and satellite clinics, HMO clinics, community primary health care centers, emergency departments, and health clinics for the homeless. Affiliations with three Area Health Education programs (AHEC) provide further opportunities for rural health experiences in Georgia and Alabama. Opportunities for international, migrant, and multicultural clinical experiences are also built into the program. A Spanish language course for health care professionals is available as an elective.
