Master of Science in Nursing
The MSN program prepares advanced practice nurses in a variety of specialty areas. Graduates are prepared to apply for the appropriate Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse Midwife certification examinations. The curriculum consists of four components: theoretical core, clinical/functional core, specialty courses, and electives. Each specialty requires a series of four courses in which the student acquires the clinical expertise necessary for advanced practice. These courses contain both classroom and practice components that are enriched by a strong cadre of adjunct faculty and clinical preceptors.
Graduation Requirements
- Completion of a minimum of 39-65 semester hours as prescribed by the chosen specialty
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
- Completion of all degree requirements within five years of date of enrollment
Admission Information and Requirements
All applicants are considered on an individual basis. Applications and supporting credentials should be submitted as early as possible in the academic year prior to entrance; however, applications will be reviewed as long as class space is available.
The School of Nursing selects those applicants who are best qualified academically and personally. After all application materials are received, the Admission Committee reviews the applicant's credentials and makes the decision to accept or deny admission. Final acceptance is contingent upon satisfactory completion of prerequisites. A final transcript must be submitted prior to matriculation. Following notice of acceptance, a non refundable deposit of $250 is required. This serves as confirmation of intent to enroll, and it will apply to the first semester's tuition.
MSN applicants must:
- Submit complete application packet, including the following:
application for admission into the MSN program, a statement of purpose addressing the questions outlined in the application, resume, three recommendations - one from an immediate supervisor in a recent work setting, one from a person who has had direct contact with the applicant in an academic setting, and one from a professional associate of the applicant's choosing.
- Submit complete college transcripts indicating BSN completion from a school accredited by the National League for Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. A grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in nursing and supportive courses based on combination of actual classroom, laboratory, and supervised clinical practice experiences is preferred.
- Submit a non-refundable $50.00 Application Fee. This is waived for current Emory Employees and students.
- Complete prerequisite course work. Introductory statistics is required for all students and health assessment is a prerequisite for all clinical specialties. Students may apply for admission while taking the prerequisite courses.
- Provide evidence of recent professional experience. One year of work experience as a registered nurse in, or related to, the selected clinical area is recommended.
- Obtain satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination or Millers Analogies Test;
- Submit evidence of current registration to practice professional nursing in at least one state. Georgia license is required prior to enrollment.
- Schedule a personal interview with a designated faculty member after the admission file is complete.
Students whose GPA in baccalaureate nursing course work is less than 3.0 may be considered if other application data indicate potential for success at the master's level.
MSN-MPH Admission Procedures and Requirements
In addition to the requirements listed above for MSN students, MSN-MPH applicants must apply to and be accepted into the Rollins School of Public Health separately. In the School of Public Health, the dual-degree applicant is expected to designate a department at the time of application. Applications are reviewed and applicants are admitted by the specific department selected by the applicant. Applicants must comply with the admission requirements of the School of Public Health as well as any additional requirements of the department to which they are applying.
Transfer Credit
A maximum of 12 semester hours of post-baccalaureate academic courses from an accredited school may be transferred and credited toward meeting the MSN degree requirements.
