International MSN Admission Checklist
The Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing recognizes the importance of diversity and welcomes applications from international students. Applications from international students will only be accepted for the fall (August) semester. International students interested in the Master of Science in Nursing program or the RN-MSN Bridge Program are encouraged to apply early in the academic year prior to the year they wish to attend the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing.
- If you have a baccalaureate degree in nursing or an equivalent degree, You should apply to be an MSN student. This program can range between three to five semesters of full-time study depending on the specialty.
- If you have an associate of arts degree in nursing or an equivalent degree or diploma, You should apply to be an RN to MSN (RN-MSN Bridge Program) student. This program is a three-year, six-semester program of study to complete undergraduate prerequisites and graduate requirements to obtain an MSN degree.
NOTE: You must take the NCLEX-RN exam to secure licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Georgia to pursue this program. For more information on this process, you may contact the Georgia Board of Nursing Professional Licensing Boards Division on 1-478-207-2440 or visit their website to download the application which contains detailed information. You will also need to submit TOEFL scores and a CGFNS evaluation as part of the application in order to be approved to sit for the exam in your home country so please allow several months to complete this very important process.
APPLICATION PROCESS
- Submit an application for admission into the MSN or RN-MSN program.
- Submit a non-refundable $50 application fee. This can be done by international money order or online with a credit card.
- Request official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores to be sent directly to the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing – institution code: 5187 (Emory University). You may call 1-609-771-7100 or visit their website for more information on the TOEFL exam. Preference is given to scores above 600 on the paper-based test, 250 on the computer-based test or 100 on the internet based test. Please note that we do not accept scores that are more than two years old.
- Request official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores to be sent directly to the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing – institution code: 5187; departmental code: 0610. You may call 1-800-473-2255 or visit their website for more information on the GRE. Preference is given to scores above 1000 and 3.5 on the analytical writing section of the exam. Please note that we do not accept scores that are more than five years old. It is important to also note that it can take up to two weeks for GRE scores to be received by our institution so plan to take the exam before you apply.
- Request that a course-by-course evaluation of your nursing credentials (academic transcripts and registered nursing license) be completed by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) and sent directly to the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing Office of Admission. - Depending on the program you are applying to you may need to have your credentials evaluated by the World Education Services, Inc. You may call 1-800-937-3897, or visit their website for more information. The official credential evaluation must be sent directly to the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing Office of Admission.
- If you are a applying for the MSN program and have completed any other degrees or courses outside the United States you may need to have this evaluation. You will need to contact the office of admissions for a determination.
- If you are a applying for the RN-MSN program and have completed any other degrees or courses outside the United States you MUST have your credentials evaluated.
- Submit three references: one from an immediate supervisor in a recent work setting; one from a person who has had direct contact with you in an academic setting; and one from a professional associate of your choosing.
- Participate in an interview with a faculty member. The Office of Admission will contact you about scheduling your interview once your application is complete. Phone interviews are available.
- Download and complete the financial certification form and the visa information form. It is recommended that you submit this information along with your application to aid in timely I-20 issuance. Please note that the I-20 will not be issued until after we receive your deposit of $250.00 which represents your intention to matriculate.
AFTER ADMISSION
- Submit your $250 deposit online or by international money order. After your financial certification information has been received and verified, your I-20 will be issued and sent to you via Fed-Ex. You may then contact the U.S. consulate or embassy in your country to apply for a visa.
- Submit physical examination results from physician or nurse practitioner that gives evidence of good health.
- Submit proof of immunization or immune status.
- Provide evidence of adequate health insurance coverage by enrollment in Emory’s Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan. International students must purchase health insurance from the institution.
- Provide documentation of Basic Life Support CPR certification for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association. Courses are available in about 44 countries around the world. For more information, visit their web site.
