Biographical Sketch
Melissa Bupp is a
Georgia native. She lives in rural area and has a passion for rural
communities. She has an undergraduate degree from North Georgia College
in Biology. While in college she participated in meals on-wheels, and
volunteered at a battered women and children's shelter. Even while
attending North Georgia College she had an interest in healthcare. After
finishing college she traveled out West for new experiences, but returned
to Georgia. As a part of the community outreach at her worksite she was
involved in Relay for Life, March of Dimes Walkathon, American Heart
Association Walkathon, Toys for Tots and local food drives. Her mother
in-law, who is a Women's Health nurse practitioner, sparked her interest
in pursuing a Family Nurse Practitioner masters in nursing science
degree. She applied to Emory, which had been a life-long dream to attend,
and she started classes in the Fall of 2003. After completing her Masters
Degree she plans to jump into rural life again, getting back to dirt
roads and wide open spaces and work in a rural community in Southern
Georgia.
Activities and Observations in the first
two months of 2004
Since finding out in mid-December about being rewarded
the Fuld Fellowship, I have been looking for volunteer activities close to
home that I can participate in. There is a free health clinic run by
volunteer doctors, nurses and social workers in Athens called Mercy Health
Clinic. I am currently working on getting more information and a contact
name and number for the volunteer coordinator to see if the clinic is a
place that I could be of service. I am also participating in the
Clarke-Oconee Relay For Life event. This is a fundraiser that I have been
a part of since 2000 because so many lives are touched by cancer is some
way or another.
