Crystal Bailey - 2007 Emory Humanitarian Award Winner

Biographical Sketch

Crystal Bailey is a graduate student enrolled in the Nurse-Midwifery program. She flew south from her home in Indiana to complete her nursing degree at Emory. She did, however, take an around-the-world flight to get here. Before graduating from Taylor University in 2003 with a degree in biology, she traveled to Kosovo and lived in both Australia and Papua New Guinea. After college, she lived and worked in East Africa for nine months. In Uganda, she worked in community development with an integrated healthcare project and was responsible for developing a program in sustainable agriculture.

During her BSN studies at Emory, Crystal confirmed her passion for learning how to care for the ill and promote health. She found numerous opportunities within the school and around Atlanta to serve vulnerable populations. She’s been actively involved on the board of the Emory International Student Nurses Association and other organizations. She accumulated more flight miles by traveling to the Bahamas to study the integration of faith and healthcare, traveling to Montana to study reconciliation with Native Americans, and traveling to Jamaica and Haiti to serve the poor. Through the International Rescue Committee, Crystal has been actively involved in working with refugees. During the summer, Crystal spent time volunteering at Mercy Care, a clinic serving the homeless population in Atlanta.

After Crystal received her nursing license in 2006, she began part-time work as a Mother-Baby nurse to complement her graduate studies in Midwifery. After her anticipated graduation in December 2007, she hopes to find a job serving the rural Appalachian population. Her interests in global health continue, with a special interest in malaria and pregnancy.

Reflection on the Fellowship

My immersion in developing countries has opened my eyes to the incredible need for access to healthcare, and how important the roles of nurses and midwives are in delivering it worldwide. I’ve discovered that the heart of caring is embodied in nursing and midwifery, and am very satisfied to have somehow fallen into what is a perfect path for me, but could never have been planned. The continuing saga and unveiled story of my exciting life has taught me much. I look forward to exploring interests in integrating modern healthcare with traditional systems and natural medicine, as well as supporting the crossroads of sustainable living and wellness.

It’s been exciting to be a part of a nursing school that emphasizes working with vulnerable populations. The Fuld Fellowship has been a rewarding experience for me. The support of faculty and the shared passion with other students committed to service and leadership has made for many valuable experiences. I’ve appreciated the opportunities to meet with leaders in healthcare from around the world and to also travel with the school to partner with healthcare abroad. It’s been a great path to launch me into whatever the future holds.
