INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

ADMISSION
What program am I eligible for?
You can receive either a BSN or a MSN degree from the Emory School of Nursing. You must have your credentials evaluated by the WES (previous non-nursing coursework) and/or the CGFNS (previous nursing coursework) which will enable us to tell you which specific program you may be eligible for. You may contact one of our advisors for more specific information and guidance.
When can I apply? International students are encouraged to begin the application process at least a year before they plan to attend so as to have enough time to complete all the requirements for visa processing. For the BSN program, applications are accepted for fall entry only and the deadline is usually on or around January 15. For the MSN program, international applications are now only accepted for fall entry and the priority deadline is on or around January 15 but applications will be accepted after that time on a space available basis only.
How do I apply?
Applications are available online. You may download the application and print it but it is highly recommended that you complete the application online and electronically submit it.
Is the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) required?
The TOEFL is required unless you meet the following criteria: you have completed your Bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution in the United States or your native language is English; you were initially educated in Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, South Africa, Trinidad, or the UK; and language of instruction and textbooks was English. Preference will be given to applicants with a score of 600 or greater on the written test; 250 or greater on the computer-based test; and 100 or greater on the IBT.
What other tests are required?
If you are applying to the BSN/MSN Segue program or the MSN or RN-MSN program, the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) is required. We find that more students take the GRE because it is more widely accepted. Preference will be given to applicants with a GRE score of at least 1000 combined in the Quantitative and Verbal sections of the exam and a score of at least 3.5 on the analytical writing section.
When will a decision on my application be made?
For the BSN program, decisions are made after the January 15 deadline and decision letters are mailed shortly after. For the MSN program, as soon as your application is complete, it will be reviewed by the admission committee and a decision will be made. The usual timeframe is about 2 weeks to a month after your application is complete.
When should I complete the financial certification form, and the visa information form?
These forms are not required as part of the application process; however it is recommended that you download them and return the original copies to our office along with your application or soon after you have completed your application.
When will my I-20 be issued?
The I-20 will be issued after we receive your $250 deposit and after we receive the financial certification and visa information forms. It will be sent to you via fed-ex or registered mail after which you can contact your consulate or embassy and follow their process for receiving your visa.
What if I am already in the United States?
If you are a BSN student transferring from another institution or a student applying to the MSN program after you have completed Optional Practical Training (OPT), then you will need to complete the transfer process, which is slightly different. You many contact our office for more information.
What if I am a permanent resident now but was educated outside the United States?
We require that you submit proof of residency by submitting a copy of your green card. While you will not need to complete the financial certification process, you may still need to have your credentials evaluated by the WES or the CGFNS. You may contact our office for more information.
Do I have to be licensed to practice nursing in the state of Georgia?
Yes, you must be licensed to practice in Georgia.
How do I get licensed in Georgia?
You should contact the Georgia Board of Nursing for the specific information on how to obtain licensure in Georgia. The process can be a lengthy one, especially if you still reside outside the country so it is highly encouraged that you begin the process of obtaining licensure at least a year before you plan to enroll in our program.

Are there any scholarships or other financial aid available for international students?
All students who apply by the priority deadline of January 15 are considered for merit awards ranging from $3,000-$7,000. These awards are subject to GPA requirements based on the profile of the incoming class. Please note that all international students are required to show proof of funding for at least the first year of their education so even though you may be awarded a scholarship later on in the process, you must show that you can afford to pay all the costs initially.
How else can I finance my education?
International students are encouraged to look for outside funding to help offset the costs of tuition and fees. These sources include your own government as well as international agencies. We have also compiled a list of some financial aid resources specifically for international students, which can be found on our financial aid page.
