Marla E. Salmon, ScD, RN, FAAN

In 1999, Dr. Marla Salmon became dean of the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing of Emory University, and is a professor in both nursing and public health. She is an expert in health policy and administration, and has held national government, professional and academic positions.

Dr. Salmon has extensive experience in healthcare workforce development, including having served as the Director of the Division of Nursing of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In this capacity, she led the key federal programs aimed at shaping the nation’s nursing workforce. She has served as Chair of the National Advisory Committee on Nursing Education and Practice, and also chaired the Global Advisory Group on Nursing and Midwifery of the World Health Organization.

Dr. Salmon’s academic experience in schools of nursing and public health has focused on the development of leaders. She has served as a faculty member in health policy and administration programming. Dr. Salmon has been called upon to play significant advisory roles nationally and internationally, including membership on the White House Task Force on Health Care Reform, and most recently, the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Rapid Advance Demonstration Projects, the Nursing Advisory Council of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization, t he National Academies Nursing Panel for Committee on Monitoring the Changing Needs for Biomedical and Behavioral Research Personnel Study, and participant in the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Think Tank. Dr. Salmon is a member Board of Trustees for the National Council on Healthcare Leadership (NCHL), and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and was on their National Advisory Committee for the Executive Nurse Fellows Program.

Dr. Salmon has received numerous awards and recognitions, including membership in the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Nursing. Her federal leadership led to her receipt of the President’s Meritorious Executive Award and both the U.S. Public Health Service’s Chief Nurse Award and Special Recognition awards. Dr. Salmon has received the American Nurses’ Association Community Health Nurse of the Year award and has been recognized by the National Black Nurses’ Foundation for her role in enhancing the ethnic and racial diversity of the nation’s nursing workforce.

Dr. Salmon received her doctoral degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, holds degrees in nursing and political science from the University of Portland, and is the recipient of two honorary degrees. Dr. Salmon has also been a Fellow in the W. K. Kellogg National Fellowship Program and the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.
