Café 458
Café 458 is a free restaurant that has
been serving homeless persons since 1988. Located in the heart of
the Martin Luther King Jr. historical district, the cafe provides
physical nourishment and empowerment to homeless individuals who are
trying to change their lives and get off the streets. Nell Hodgson
Woodruff School of Nursing faculty member Ann Connor, MSN, RN,
FNP, served as Chair of the Board of Directors and has played an
important role in the cafe. She was recognized by the Atlanta
Business Chronicle as an Atlanta Health Care Hero for the work with Café
458.
Ann and her husband, A.B. Short (Office of Service Learning Board
Member), coordinated an emergency night shelter that was not set up to
address the long-term needs or life changes for those being served.
It was out of this desire to assist people on the streets who were ready
to make life changes that Café 458 was born.
The staff and social service providers work to help guests achieve the
sense of accomplishment and empowerment necessary to make lasting,
positive life changes.
