Farmworker Family Health Program

Family Farm Worker Health Program

This program is a two week intensive immersion learning experience, where faculty and students relocate from an urban to a rural community to provide health care to migrant and seasonal farm workers and their families.

Program Benefits

Many gains, not immediately evident, emerge from this two-week program. Here is a partial list to consider,

  • Children receive physicals necessary to enter the school system.

  • Episodic care of farmworkers may be the only health care they receive during the year.

  • Mentoring between the nurse practitioners and undergraduates provides additional education and encouragement.

  • Students develop respect for unfamiliar cultures and lifestyles i.e. rural lifestyles and cultures of the farm workers.

  • Students face real-world health care challenges such as working with interpreters and medical supply shortages.

  • Interdisciplinary collaboration enables all students to appreciate the contribution of other health professionals to the well being of the person.

  • All students are responsible for their own transportation between Atlanta and Moultrie, and all local transportation once in Moultrie between the hotel, school, camps, etc. (It is possible .... but not guaranteed ... that some AHEC funding may be available to offset transportation-related expenses.)

  • All students who are accepted must submit a non-refundable check for $100 to hold their place in the program. This check will be used to defray the cost of the hotel.

  • For graduate students enrolled in coursework for summer semester 2010 there are no additional fees associated with participation in the program.

  • For graduate students who are NOT enrolled in summer semester 2010 coursework, a residency fee of $125 would apply.

  • For undergraduates, who are only involved in the Moultrie Farm Worker Family Health Program for the summer (with no other course registration on file), the summer semester residency fee of $125 would apply.
