Dr. Jo Ann Dalton is a nationally and internationally recognized scholar in the management of pain, especially pain associated with cancer. Her numerous nationally funded projects have focused on tailoring congnitive-behavioral interventions to optimize pain management and on teaching health care professionals the full range of therapeutic options available to patients. Her research has appeared in several journals including the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Journal of Holistic Nursing, and Oncology Nursing Forum.
She has been widely honored, having received both a Kings Fund Fellowship and a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Nurse Scholar Fellowship. The North Carolina Nurses Association named her Nurse Researcher of the Year in 1989; in 1990, she was elected to a fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing. The North Carolina Nurses Association Board of Trustees honored her with its Outstanding Service Award in 2003.
Dalton earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from Duke. She received a doctor of education degree from North Carolina State University.
