Women's Health Nurse Practitioner
The Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) program prepares nurses to deliver primary care to women throughout the life span. The program is based on in-depth knowledge of theory, pathophysiology, research utilization, pharmacotherapeutics, and clinical decision-making skills. Program emphasis is on the primary care of women, including reproductive-gynecologic health. The curriculum meets the guidelines for education established by both the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health, and is the only master’s program accredited by the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health. The WHNP program requires thirty-nine credit hours and may be completed in one calendar year of full-time study or may be pursed part-time. The RN-MSN option is also available. Graduates are prepared to take the national Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner certification exam.
Unique Highlights: Students have the opportunity to provide care for women across the lifespan, from adolescents to old age. The program seeks to prepare health professionals who will provide care to women in rural and underserved areas. Resources such as the Emory Women’s Center enrich academic studies. In the first semester of study, students choose a population of women of particular interest to them and initiate the process of developing, implementing, and evaluating a community health education project that will continue through the degree program.
Clinical Experience: A variety of clinical sites offer students the choice of working in many different healthcare settings with diverse populations of women. Clinical sites include rural clinics, student health services, Planned Parenthood agencies, public health clinics, HIV clinics, oncology treatment centers, and infertility clinics. There is an opportunity to participate in service learning projects such as the migrant farm worker summer project.
Career Opportunities: The Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner program prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities in a variety of environments, including private practice, public health, correctional health, family planning agencies, and reproductive health.
