Public Health Nursing Leadership

The master’s degree program in Public Health Nursing Leadership prepares nurses to address the broad range of health needs in a population.  This specialty program focuses on the health needs of the community rather than on the needs of an individual client, and has a strong emphasis on disease prevention and health promotion.  Students have the opportunity to take some of the program courses in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.  Graduates are prepared to take  the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Public/Community Health Nursing certification exam from the American Nurse Credentialing Center.

Flexible Studies:  This program can be completed with three semesters of full-time study or may be pursued part-time.  Most nursing classes are conducted on Saturdays.  Courses in the School of Public Health are Internet-based.

Specialty/Degree Options:  Areas of specialization in the Public Health Nursing program include Environmental Health Nursing, Occupational Health Nursing, Health Education, and Disaster/Bioterrorism.  Students have the option of pursuing the MSN-MPH dual degree option, which requires 32 credit hours from the Rollins School of Public Health.  The RN-MSN option is also available.

Public Health Nursing Practice Experience:  Sites include the Department of Human Resources (State Health Department), CDC, nationally recognized voluntary agencies, and county health departments.

Unique Highlights:  The proximity of Emory University School of Nursing to the CDC, the Rollins School of Public Health, and the Carter Presidential Center provides students unique opportunities to participate in cutting edge developments in public health.  The program also provides preceptorships with a public health nursing leader in the student’s area of interest.

Career Opportunities:  The Public Health Nursing program prepares nurses for leadership and management positions in health education, program development, consultation, and administration.
