BSN Questions

How long is the BSN program?
Both the traditional BSN and BSN 2nd Degree programs begin every fall and are two-year, four semester (fall, spring, fall, spring) full-time programs.

How long is the Accelerated BSN/MSN program?
The Accelerated BSN/MSN program (ABSN/MSN) begins each summer.  The BSN portion of the program is full-time and takes approximately 15 months to complete.  Students begin their MSN studies the next semester.  The MSN portion of the program takes 3 to 5 semesters of full-time study depending on the student's chosen graduate specialty and can also be done part-time.

Where can I take the prerequisite courses?
Prerequisites can be taken at any regionally accredited college, university, or community college. Official transcripts must be sent from every college or university attended to verify course work.

Do I have to have all of the prerequisites completed to apply to the nursing school?
You may apply and be admitted to the nursing program without having completed all of the prerequisite courses, but enrollment in the program is contingent upon successful completion of all prerequisites with a grade of C or better. 

Do you accept transfer credits for nursing courses from other schools?
Up to 12 semester hours of transfer credit for nursing courses from any National League for Nursing or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited schools are allowed with faculty approval.  Transfer credit cannot be evaluated until after a student has applied and been accepted to the School of Nursing; course syllabi of courses are requested for review and evaluation of the course content.

Do I have to apply to Emory University and to the School of Nursing?
No, only one application to the School of Nursing is required.

Is the BSN program full-time?
The BSN program is a full-time day program. Students may be able to work minimal hours at a flexible part-time job while in the program.

What is the application fee?
The application fee is $50.

Is an interview required for Admission to the BSN program?
Interviews are not required for admission to the BSN program. However, the Admission Committee may request an interview if special circumstances exist.

What is the minimum score for the GRE (segue applicants only)?
Preference will be given to applicants with a GRE score of at least 1000 combined in the quantitative and verbal sections of the exam and a score of at least 3.5 on the analytical writing section.

Do I have to submit TEAS scores to be accepted to the School of Nursing?
The TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is a required part of the application for applicants to the BSN, BSN 2nd Degree, and ABSN/MSN programs.

What is the minimum GPA for admission?
We prefer to see at least a 3.0 in all course work. The average GPA of admitted students is a 3.5.

What is the deadline for admission?
The priority deadline for the Accelerated BSN/MSN application is December 1st.  The priority deadline for the traditional BSN, BSN 2nd Degree, and BSN-MSN Segue programs is January 15th.  We encourage all applicants to have their application materials received or postmarked by the priority deadline.  Any applications completed after the priority deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.

Is a deposit required after getting accepted?
A tuition deposit of $250 is required to reserve your space in the class. This deposit will be deducted from your first semester tuition bill.

What clinical sites are used in the BSN program?
Emory nursing students benefit from Emory’s rich healthcare resources in the Atlanta area. Clinicals are done at many local hospitals including Emory University, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Grady Memorial Hospital, the VA Medical Center, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Northside, Wesley Woods, and many more. Other local resources that students benefit from include the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Carter Center, and the American Cancer Society.

What is the student to clinical faculty ratio?
The BSN clinical faculty to student ratio is 8:1.

MSN Questions

Do I have to apply to Emory University and to the School of Nursing?
No, only one application to the School of Nursing is required.

How long is the MSN program?
The length of the MSN program varies based on the specialty selected. Typically the program ranges from 3-5 semesters of full-time study (part-time is available).

Can I enroll in any semester?
Students may enroll in the fall, spring, or summer semesters. Full-time or part-time in fall and part-time only in spring and summer.

Do you have evening and weekend classes in the master’s program?
No, MSN classes are held during the day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Do you accept transfer credits for nursing courses from other schools?

What is the deadline for admission?
Emory has a rolling admission process for the MSN program. Applications are received and reviewed as long as space is available. Students are encouraged to complete their applications by January 15th the priority deadline for admission and scholarships for summer and fall admission and November 1st for spring admission; however, applications will continue to be accepted after the priority deadline on a space available basis. 

Is a deposit required after getting accepted?

Where should my official transcripts be sent?
Your official transcripts should be mailed to the Office of Admission and Student Services. Our mailing address is 1520 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30322.

How do I apply for need-based financial aid?
Students must file the FAFSA and a CSS PROFILE online after January 1st. The priority deadline for these two forms to be complete is April 1st. Applications can be received after this date, but students are encouraged to meet this deadline to receive optimal financial aid. Emory’s FAFSA school code is 001564 and the CSS code for Emory is 5187. Students must also submit signed copies of their tax returns (form 1040) including all schedules, W-2’s, and 1099’s to the Office of Financial Aid via certified mail or fax.   

What are the housing options for incoming students?
There are a variety of on-campus and off-campus options for incoming students. For more information, please visit Emory Residence Life & Housing.

Where can I look for places to live off-campus?
Local apartment finder services might be an option for some students. The residence Life web page lists some suggestions. The local newspapers also offer classified ads that are a great resource and they can be accessed online.

Admission

What program am I eligible for?
You can receive a BSN or MSN degree from the School of Nursing. You must have your credentials evaluated by the  World Education Services  for previous non-nursing coursework and/or Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools for previous nursing coursework, which will enable us to tell you which specific program you may be eligible for at Emory. You may contact one of our advisors for more specific information and guidance.

When can I apply?
International students are encouraged to begin the application process at least a year before they plan to attend so you will have enough time to complete all the requirements to process your visa. For the BSN program, applications are accepted for fall entry only and the priority deadline is January 15th. For the MSN program, international applications are accepted for fall or spring entry. The priority deadline is January 15th for fall and October 1st for spring, but applications will be accepted after that time on a space available basis only.

How do I apply?
Applications are available online. You may download the application and print it, but it is highly recommended that you complete the application online and electronically submit it.

Is the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) required?
The TOEFL is required unless you meet the following criteria:

  • You have completed your Bachelor’s degree or higher at an accredited institution in the United States

  • Your first language is English

  • Your country of citizenship is Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, South Africa, Trinidad, or the United Kingdom

Preference will be given to applicants with a TOEFL score of 600 or greater on the written test or 100 or greater on the internet-based test.

What other tests are required?
If you are applying to the ABSN/MSN or MSN program, the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) is required. We find that more students take the GRE because it is more widely accepted. Preference will be given to applicants with a GRE score of at least 300 combined in the quantitative and verbal sections of the exam and a score of at least 3.5 on the analytical writing section. Applicants to the BSN, BSN 2nd Degree, and ABSN/MSN programs are also required to submit TEAS scores.

When will a decision on my application be made?
Applications for the ABSN/MSN program that are complete by the December 1st priority deadline will be available by January 15th.  Applications for the BSN and BSN 2nd Degree programs that are complete by the January 15th priority deadline will be available by March 1st.  Applicants to the MSN program will receive admission decisions after their application is complete and they have completed their interview.

When should I complete the financial certification form and the visa information form?
These forms are not required as part of the application process; howeve, it is recommended that you download them and return the original copies to our office along with your application or soon after you have completed your application.

When will my I-20 be issued?
The I-20 will be issued after we receive your $250 deposit and after we receive the financial certification and visa information forms. It will be sent to you via Fed Ex or registered mail after which you can contact your consulate or embassy and follow their process for receiving your visa.

What if I am already in the United States?
If you are a BSN student transferring from another institution or a student applying to the MSN program after you have completed Optional Practical Training (OPT), then you will need to complete the transfer process, which is slightly different. You may contact our office for more information.

What if I am a permanent resident now but was educated outside the United States?
We require that you submit proof of residency by submitting a copy of your green card. While you will not need to complete the financial certification process, you still need to have your credentials evaluated by  World Education Services for previous non-nursing coursework and/or Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools for previous nursing coursework. You may contact our office for more information.

Do I have to be licensed to practice nursing in the state of Georgia?
In order to enroll in the program, you must have a Georgia RN license.

How do I get licensed in Georgia?
You should contact the Georgia Board of Nursing for the specific information on how to obtain licensure in Georgia. The process can be a lengthy one, especially if you still reside outside the country so it is highly encouraged that you begin the process of obtaining licensure at least a year before you plan to enroll in our program.

International Students Scholarships and Financial Aid

Are there any scholarships or other financial aid available for international students?
All students who apply by the priority deadline of January 15th are considered for annual merit-based awards ranging from $3,000-$7,000. These awards are subject to GPA requirements based on the profile of the incoming class. Please note that all international students are required to show proof of funding for at least the first year of their education, meaning that you may be awarded a scholarship later on in the process but must show that you can afford to pay all initial costs.

How else can I finance my education?
International students are encouraged to look for outside funding to help offset the costs of tuition and fees. These sources include your own government as well as international agencies.
