How to Become a Member
Criteria for Membership in Sigma Theta Tau
International
We encourage you to seek membership in Sigma Theta
Tau International. By doing so, you are aspiring to join
nurses who are committed to nursing excellence. Today,
more than 260,000 nurses in over 70 countries are proud
to count themselves among our members. The bonds between
members are deepened at nearly 400 chapters on college
and university campuses in Australia, Canada, Puerto
Rico, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States.
Undergraduate Students
To be eligible for membership as an undergraduate, you
must have completed one-half of your nursing curriculum.
You must have achieved a grade point average of at least
3.0 on a 4.0 scale, rank in the upper 35 percent of the
graduating class and meet the expectation of academic
integrity.
Graduate Students
To be eligible for membership as a master's degree
student, you should have completed one-quarter of the
master's program, achieved a grade point average of at
least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and meet the expectation of
academic integrity. Community service or leadership
activities at this level are very important.
Community Member
A community member is a potential member who is not a
student at the time of induction.
This candidate must hold a minimum of a baccalaureate
degree in nursing. Demonstrated experience and
achievement in leadership positions in nursing practice,
education, administration since graduation are
important. Any community service is an important aspect
of this level of candidacy.
At Sigma Theta Tau International we are a community
of nurses that positions the nursing profession and
ourselves at the forefront of health care by promoting
scholarship, research and leadership. As a member your
involvement can flourish into a dynamic collaboration
that is integrated and renewed throughout your lifetime.
We challenge you to be a better nurse and support your
career with an array of tools, programs and people that
are unequaled anywhere in the health care industry.
Recognizing that honor society membership was not
available to many of today's outstanding nurse leaders
and scholars, the society created the "community
leader/nurse professional" membership category to honor
these individuals for their achievements and
contributions to nursing. We want to introduce you to
Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society of Nursing,
and to invite you to apply for membership.
